Billboard Mainstream Rock – Top 50 Songs of 2014

These are the top mainstream rock songs of 2014 according to Billboard. The chart ranks songs played on mainstream rock radio stations in the United States by total number of plays each week. Therefore, these are the songs that received the most radio airplay in 2014. The Billboard chart year runs from the first week of December to the final week of November, so the 2014 year began in December 2013 and ended in November 2014.

The top song of 2014 goes to “Heaven Knows” by the Pretty Reckless, which spent 5 weeks at number one from March 22 to April 26, 2014. The Pretty Reckless are only the second female-fronted band to reach the top of the chart since 1990, when “Black Velvet” by Alannah Myles topped the chart. Twenty-three years of male domination followed, until Halestorm broke the trend in 2013 when their song “Freak Like Me” hit number one. The Pretty Reckless are also the first female-fronted band since 1987 to score two number-one singles in a row. The Pretenders scored back-to-back chart toppers in November 1986 and January 1987.

Overall, 2014 saw both new and established bands achieve success. Avenged Sevenfold were the top mainstream rock artist, while exciting newcomers such as Royal Blood and Nothing More experienced plentiful airplay. The chart continued to be dominated by hard rock and alternative metal, although several heavier “indie” bands such as Arctic Monkeys, the Black Keys, and Cage the Elephant – all favorites on the Billboard Alternative chart – received significant airplay.

A purple banner means the song was still on the chart when the year-end results arrived.

Video was created with Sony Vegas Pro 12.

Intro/outro music is “Keys to the Kingdom” by Linkin Park.
