Musical Influences & Music Inspiration – 90s alternative, alt-rock – From the Mind of McFarland video blog.

One question that a musician gets asked in most any interview is some form of “what are your biggest musical influences” or “how would you describe your music” or “what is your music’s inspiration”? And it’s one of the most difficult questions for me to answer, because I draw my influences from so many places, and at the same time, from none very specifically. I’m aware that I have a tendency to let a little of whatever I’ve been listening to a lot of bleed into my music – for example, if I’ve been listening to a lot of graceland-era Paul Simon, you can expect some African-esque rhythms to find their ways into my music. If I’m listening to pop music, you’ll get shinier, happier songs, if I’m listening to 90s alternative the songs I write will have much more of an alt-rock vibe.

I’ve also discovered that I have a tendency to unknowingly borrow phrases from other songs that I haven’t heard in months, or even years. Before you cry “copyright infringement!”, you should know that very thought troubled me for a long time, until I realized that everyone does it, and also that working within the western major/minor scale and standard chord structures (which I don’t usually break out of), there are bound to be similarities. Earlier this week my friend Josh shared the song “Resurrection Fern” by Iron and Wine with me, and I noticed the chorus sounded very familiar. It took me a while to place it, and I burst out laughing when I realized that it shares a melodic phrase with the bridge of “Kind and Generous” by Natalie Merchant. I’m sure that Samuel Beam didn’t intend to crib that phrase, and probably didn’t even realize he was doing so.

I could go on with more examples such as these – the chorus to “Hear We Go Again” by Mat Kearney (a personal favorite of mine) is the same as the verses to “Complicated” by Avril Lavigne. The structure of my song “Lighthouse” is almost identical to “Fix You” by Coldplay. The chorus of my band Aviatik’s song “Goodnight, Sweetheart, Goodnight” resembles the verses of Rob Thomas’s “Little Wonders”. Elements of songs can become ingrained into one’s self-conscious, and re-emerge in the creative process.

Creativity is all about taking the things you’ve absorbed and reinterpreting them into something fresh. No artist is without musical influences… but artists don’t always know what their own influences are!

Unleaded rhythmic alt-pop fuels singer/songwriter and two-wheel troubadour Michael McFarland’s engine. Michael McFarland in the simplest summary? Writer, Rocker, Biker, Geek.

All that I want
Is to wake up fine
Tell me that I’m alright
That I Ain’t gonna die
All that I want
Is a hole in the ground
You can tell me when it’s alright
For me to come out

Gonna make you wonder why you even try
Gonna take you down and laugh when you cry
And I still don’t know how I even survive
and I gotta get to rock bottom

Walking around
With my little raincloud
Hanging over my head
And it ain’t coming down
Where do I go?
Gimme some sort of sign
Hit me with lightning!
Maybe I’ll come alive

Tell my friends I’m coming down
We’ll kick it when I hit the ground
