UFO Guitarist & Keyboardist Paul Raymond Dead at 73 – Our Tribute

UFO Guitarist & Keyboardist Paul Raymond Dead at 73
April 13, 2019 – Raymond goes way back with UFO joining in 1976 and first appeared on the band highest charting album in the U.S. “Lights Out.” from May of 1977 which peaked at #23 on the Billboard album chart. He was also on “Obsession” the following year, the live album, “Strangers in the Night’ in 1979, “No Place to Run” from 1980. He then left to join another parting member of UFO Michael Schenker for his new band simply title the Michael Schenker group. We will have our new interview with Schenker this week on our channel. Raymond was in UFO four different times. He’d been with them this last time since 2003.

Raymond had just played his last UK show with UFO a handful of days ago. The group was winding down after singer and co-founder Phil Mogg announced his retirement. Raymond’s partner announced his death on Facebook. She wrote, “With a desperate and broken heart, fully in tears and pains that feel like they will kill me I have to tell you that my most beautiful and beloved darling Paul Raymond has passed away today.

“The doctors were trying to reanimate him and with success at first but then his system shot down again and there was nothing more they could do for him, he died of a heart attack. He absolutely enjoyed the last couple of weeks touring with UFO in the UK & Ireland and he was looking forward to the rest of this year’s tour. I will always love him and I hope he will rest in peace until I’ll see him again on the other side!!!”

When Christine McVie left the band Chicken Shack to join Fleetwood Mac it was Paul Raymon who replaced her in that band.

UFO was not completely done the band planned had European festival dates for June and July and a final US tour starting in October.

Raymond also played with Savoy Brown and Fleetwood Mac guitarist Danny Kirwan. – by John Beaudin

Dick Dale, The King of Surf Guitar, Dead at 81 – Our Tribute

Dick Dale, The King of the Surf Guitar, Dead at 81
Here’s a guitarist who could play fast. He was the pioneer in “surf rock,” best know for his 1962 hit “Misirlou.” He had a distinctive sound mixing middle eastern styles with lots of reverb and extremely fast picking. He once said that his sound was also influenced by the fast drumming of Gene Krupa and screams of wild animals and the feel of being on the beach.

He died last night. He was thew first wave of beach music and the Beach Boys had the second. Dale said he was Leo Fender’s test pilot for fender stratocasters adding, ‘When it can withstand the barrage of punishment from Dick Dale, then it is fit for the human consumption.’ So I blew up over 50 amplifiers. And that’s why they call me the Father of Heavy Metal.”

That 1962 hit Misirlou, which was a traditional song from the eastern Mediterranean region, became a national sensation when he performed it on the Ed Sullivan show that same year, It was also the theme from Pulp Fiction from 1994.Tarantino told Rolling Stone. “Having Misirlou as your opening credit, it’s just so intense, It just says you’re watching an epic, you’re watching a big, ol’ movie … It just throws down a gauntlet that the movie now has to live up to.” “Miserlou” has been streamed over 23 million time on Spotify alone.

He moved to California in the mid-1950’s and immersed himself in surf culture and would play lots of sold out shows at :”surfer Stomps.”

Dale retired from music in the 1970 but got the bug again in the 80’s. In 2015 he told the Pittsburgh City Paper, “I can’t stop touring because I will die. Physically and literally, I will die.” He had numerous health issues including diabetes and post cancer treatment that insurance would not pay for. – by John Beaudin

Gregg Allman – Music Legend died at 69 – Full Story – Tribute

Music Legend Gregg Allman died at 69
When it came to the Allman Brothers band – he played on everything. They were the quintessential Southern-Rock band even though Gregg disliked that tag.

His management confirmed his death today saying, Allman “passed away peacefully at his home in Savannah, Georgia, Gregg struggled with many health issues over the past several years. During that time, Gregg considered being on the road playing music with his brothers and solo band for his beloved fans, essential medicine for his soul. Playing music lifted him up and kept him going during the toughest of times.”

He was born Gregory LeNoir Allman on December 8, 1947 in Nashville, Tennessee. He was always the main vocalist and composer.

For many years this group had the The Three Musketeers motto, “All for one and one for all.” They lived together, played and traveled together and partied together which certainly helped at the groups inception in 1969 when they were starving, malnourished and looking for their audience. They still stayed up all night raising hell. When they weren’t practicing it was party time.

Duane’s vision was to have a “different” band with two lead guitarists and two drummers. They even toyed with calling themselves Beelzebub.

Those first two Allman Brothers Band LP’s, the self-titled debut from 1969 and 1970’s “Idlewild South” were not big hits at first even though there classic tunes on both. The first had “Whipping Post” which Rolling Stone magazine called an “enduring anthem … rife with tormented blues-ballad imagery” and it also contained Muddy Waters classic “Trouble No More.” “Idlewild South” had “Midnight Rider” which Gregg Allman called, “the song I’m most proud of in my career.” It also featured a future concert mainstay, “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” a jazz flavored groovy instrumental.

These architects of southern rock found their commercial footing however on their third. A little light bulb went off for Gregg Allman when he realized that without commercial success the band could still survive as a concert act and their drummers were a huge part on that sound. After all the crowds were building so maybe it was time for a live album?

In July 1971 they released, “At Fillmore East.” It’s considered one of the best live albums of all time and it was a hit on the charts peaking at #13 on the charts. Everything changed after that.

With increased popularity came the usual rock n roll carnage, drugs and booze. Duane Allman, bassist Berry Oakley and a few of their roadies went into rehab.

The bands biggest blow came on October 29, 1971. At 24, Duane Allman, was killed in a motorcycle accident. On deciding the future of the band Trucks said, “We all had this thing in us and Duane put it there. He was the teacher and he gave something to us—his disciples—that we had to play out.”

“Eat a Peach” did feature Duane and was dedicated to him and reached #5 on the Billboard charts. It feature the gorgeous tune, “Melissa” that was originally thought to be too soft for the group. Gregg wrote it in 1967 and would later play it at Duane’s funeral. Then bassist Berry Oakley was killed in another motorcycle accident a few blocks from where Duane died. They are buried side-by-side.

Interestingly they called their next project “Brothers and Sisters” even though the family atmosphere in the band was fading fast via drugs and arguments. It did feature, “Ramblin’ Man their only top 10 hits it was their only #1 album. MORE AT www.johnbeaudin.com
